If you own a horse farm, and need to protect your home and buildings, as well as cover your equine liability, our horse farm package provides complete coverage for a horse farm including:

  • Property insurance to cover your home and contents, barns, sheds, owned machinery, equipment, tack and livestock.
  • Liability insurance to cover your home and your horse operation, on and off premises, including such operations as: boarding, breeding, racing, training, horse shows, and riding instruction.

Commercial equine liability

If you perform any of these activities on rented or owned premises, you need a commercial equine liability policy, even if you have other coverage that protects you for general liability exposures.  This coverage is designed specifically for all types of horse-related businesses, such as: boarding, breeding, racing, training, riding instruction, horse sales, horse shows, clinics, personal/pleasure horses and team roping/penning practices.  We also have coverage for independent horse trainers and riding instructors. 

Coverage highlights 

  • Liability limits of $300,000 to $1million are available for bodily injury and property damage
  • General liability aggregate limits are 3 times the liability per occurrence limit
  • Commercial general liability coverage applies on and off premises in the U.S, Canada, and U.S. territories
  • Fire legal liability up to $100,000 at no charge (in most states)
  • Medical payments up to $5,000
  • Limited professional liability coverage for trainers, riding instructors and clinicians
  • Personal/advertising injury included
  • Products/completed operations included
  • No liability deductible
  • Defense cost paid in excess of policy limit
  • Limited athletic participants coverage included

Additional coverages available: Care, custody and control

  • Defense and court costs for litigation, and payment for judgements up to the aggregate policy amount (per animal limit applies)

Excess or umbrella liability Coverage is an excess limit of general liability over third party liability coverages. We require the primary general liability policy to be written with Markel. The auto and employers liability can be written with outside carriers. Self insured retention of $10,000.

Insurance options

Horse mortality

All risk mortality and theft is a comprehensive policy that reimburses the horse owner for the death, theft and humane destruction of a covered horse. Our policies are agreed value, and we offer full mortality and theft, or specified perils coverage. 

Specified perils coverage (also known as "Named Perils" or "Restricted Perils") covers a horse for death, theft or humane destruction caused by specified perils listed in the policy, including but not limited to fire, lightning, earthquakes, electrocution, drowning, transit risks and attack by wild animals. It is important to note a specified perils policy does not cover your horse for death due to illness or disease.

  • No vet certificate required for horses valued under $50,000 and with no pre-existing health conditions.

Therapeutic riding

Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Int'l) Markel's insurance program is tailored only for members of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International. Coverage consists of a $1,000,000 per occurrence general liability policy and an excess accident medical policy available in limits of $10,000, $25,000 or $50,000.  Volunteers are included as insureds.  PATH Int'l Centers that purchase their general liability from Markel are also eligible for discounted D&O coverage.
